This study aimed to investigate the effects of growth regulators on germination rates and biochemical compound concentrations in Carica papaya L. seeds (‘Formosa’ group). The seeds were harvested from fruits at maturation stages 3 and 5 (50 and 75% yellow fruit skin, respectively). The effects of 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (CEPA), KNO3 and gibberellic acid (GA3)on seed germination, germination index speed, soluble sugars, starch, lipids, soluble proteins and total proteins of the papaya seeds were evaluated. The seeds from stage 5 showed a higher rate of germination 30 days after sowing than did the seeds from stage 3. Treatment with CEPA decreased seed germination, apparently due to decreased starch mobilization; the opposite response was observed... |

The objective of the present work was to investigate the antioxidant enzyme activities and the occurrence of lipid peroxidation during storage of J. curcas seeds obtained from fruits at different maturity stages. Seeds extracted from fruits collected at three stages of maturity were used, i.e., yellow, brownish-yellow, and brown (dry fruits). The seeds were subsequently stored for 18 months in Kraft paper bags in a laboratory environment. Initially as well as every three months, the seeds were evaluated for germination and electrical conductivity, and the seed embryos were evaluated for lipid peroxidation; protein content; and superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and ascorbate peroxidase enzyme activity at the same time points. In general, the seeds from the... |

The study aimed to define the best conditions to conduct germination tests for Ormosia arborea seeds and assess the viability of seeds using the tetrazolium test. The germination tests were conducted at temperatures of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 °C and alternating temperatures of 20-30 °C, in the presence or absence of light. For the tetrazolium test, seeds were immersed in tetrazolium solution 0.075%, at 35 °C for three hours, and then the viability was evaluated. It was verified that the seeds did not present absolute photosensitivity. The tetrazolium test was effective in separating the seeds into two categories concerning seed viability, viable and nonviable. It was concluded that O. arborea seeds germinate in the presence or absence of light in a wide... |
